The hospital bag, minus the noise

Most lists online have you packing for a week away. After three babies, here's the honest version: the things that actually earn their place in the bag, and the ones you can leave at home.

The hospital bag, *minus the noise*

With my first, I packed a suitcase. With my third, a small holdall — and I still came home with things unworn, tags on. Hospitals are warm, stays are short, and you'll want less than the internet tells you. This is the list I'd hand a friend.

For the baby

  • Bodysuits (4-5).Short-sleeve in a warm ward, long-sleeve if it's cold. Bamboo sits softest against brand-new skin.
  • Sleepers or pajamas (2-3). Look for a two-way zip — it opens from the bottom for nappy changes without undressing the whole baby.
  • A sleep bag or swaddle. Easier and safer than loose blankets, and it travels straight home to the cot.
  • Hat and socks (1-2).Newborns lose heat fast; a thin bamboo layer is plenty indoors.
  • Going-home outfit (1). Soft, simple, no fiddly buttons. You'll be tired.
  • Muslins (2-3).Burp cloth, sun shade, light cover — the hardest-working thing in the bag.
  • Nappies and wipes.A small pack; the hospital often provides some, but don't count on your size.

The seam test: turn newborn clothes inside out before you pack. Flat seams and tagless labels mean nothing rubs that first delicate skin — it's the detail you only notice at 3 a.m. on day one.

For you

  • A long phone charger. The single most forgotten, most missed item.
  • Comfortable going-home clothes. Soft, high-waisted, nothing you'd mourn if it got Toiletries and lip balm. Wards are dry; small comforts feel huge.
  • Snacks and a water bottle. Labour and night feeds don't keep office hours.
  • Documents. ID, maternity notes, hospital paperwork — in one folder, on top.

What to leave at home

You don't need a week's worth of outfits, newborn shoes, a full first-aid kit or three packs of nappies. Hospitals are heated, your stay is likely short, and anything missing can be brought in. Pack light, label one bag for you and one for baby, and keep them by the door from week 36.

Common questions

Four to five bodysuits and two to three sleepers cover a typical stay. Babies spend most of it skin-to-skin or sleeping, so you'll change them less than you expect.

Have it packed and by the door by around 36 weeks. Keep documents and the phone charger on top so nothing's a scramble.

Wards are usually warm, so short-sleeve bodysuits with a sleep bag are often enough. Pack one long-sleeve layer in case the room runs cool.

The best hospital bag is the one you can lift with one hand. Pack the soft essentials, leave the just-in-case pile at home, and save your energy for the part that matters — meeting them.
