Routines that actually work

There's no magic formula for baby sleep — but there are habits. A short, repeatable routine signals "night is coming" far better than any gadget, and it's the closest thing to a reliable off-switch.

Routines that actually *work*

When my first daughter was born, I spent nights touching the back of her neck to tell if she was cold or hot. No one had explained something as basic as how much to put on her for sleep. By the third I had it clear, and that's what I share here: it's not about more layers, but about matching the layers to her room temperature.

Keep it short and repeatable

A bedtime routine doesn't need to be long — 20 to 30 minutes is plenty. What matters is that you can do it every single night, at home or away, tired or not. If it's too elaborate to repeat on a hard day, it's too elaborate. Aim for three or four steps you could do half-asleep.

A simple sequence that works

  • Dim the lights. Lower the lighting across the home 30 minutes before bed — it nudges melatonin along better than any app.
  • Warm bath or wipe-down. The small drop in body temperature afterwards helps trigger sleepiness.
  • Into bamboo pajamas. Same comfortable layer every night becomes part of the cue — and keeps them at an even temperature through the night.
  • A feed, then a book or song. Quiet, close, unhurried. The same one or two songs work fine.

Consistency beats perfection. You will miss nights — travel, illness, life. It won't undo your progress. Just return to the same sequence the next evening; the routine is robust as long as it's the default, not the exception.

Set the stage for staying asleep

A good routine gets them down; the right environment keeps them down. Aim for a room around 18-21 C, dress for that temperature, and choose a breathable fabric so they don't wake hot and damp. Bamboo's thermoregulation smooths out the small temperature swings of the night — fewer wakings from being too warm or too cool.

Common questions

You can introduce a gentle, short routine from the early weeks — dim lights, pajamas, feed, song. Newborn sleep is irregular by nature, so think of it as planting a cue rather than enforcing a schedule.

Around 20-30 minutes. Long enough to wind down, short enough to repeat every night without fail. Consistency matters far more than length.

It's fine. One off night — travel, illness, a late event — won't undo the habit. Just go back to the same steps the next evening and the routine holds.

A sleep routine isn't a magic trick — it's a promise you repeat every night until their body believes it. Keep it short, keep it boring, keep it the same. The consistency is the magic.
